When the first Rio movie was released, my family and I were soooo excited to see it! Having been born and grown up in Brazil until the age of 11, I was thrilled when I heard about this animated movie and upon watching it, the entire fam fell in love with it. So much so that in that same year, my daughter, Anabelle, decided to dress up as one of the main characters of the movie {Jewel, the blue macaw} for Halloween! With the assistance of my incredibly talented friend, Claudia of Tini Posh who created the gorgeous tutu dress and my dad who burned a few fingers off by hot gluing blue feathers to what once was angel wings, the costume came to life! I finished it off by painting a beak, gluing blue feathers and adding a pink flower to a plain mask for her face. Not only did she resemble the blue macaws from the film, the outfit was also reminiscent of the amazing costumes worn by samba dancers during Carnaval. Well, a more kid-friendly version, that is! Lol!
As my mom’s birthday rolled around last September, I thought a Brazilian celebration with a fun, yet more mature feel would be perfect. We threw this Let Me Take You to Rio party, commemorating with traditional Brazilian food, such as bbq meat {churrasco}, coxinha, pão de queijo, as well as drinks and, of course, samba music!
With the 2014 FIFA World Cup just ending in Brazil, it’s already been a lively {and extremely nerve-wracking} Summer, as my family and I cheered on both the USA and Brazil teams. Sadly, neither of our teams made it to the final game, so when we heard that Rio 2 was finally being released on DVD, it definitely cheered us up! Anabelle and I had seen it when it first came out in theaters, but the hubby had yet to watch it, which made it a perfect opportunity for family movie time!
As soon as the Rio 2 DVD was released on July 15th, we headed to Walmart and picked up the DVD combo pack, as well Pop Secret popcorn because seriously, how can a movie be enjoyed with popcorn? My daughter has such a deep love for popcorn that would eat popcorn every single day of her life if she had the chance! To transport us to Brazil, I served the delicious buttery popcorn in a wooden banana bowl with the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, along with a popular Brazilian soft drink called Guaraná in little coconut cups with paper straws and umbrellas. It was a simple way to add to the entire experience and make it a memorable one!
Not only did we have so much fun watching the movie and snackin’ on popcorn and Guaraná, we ended it by having a Rio dance party! The music in the film is infectious and you can’t help getting up and dancing. One of our favorite parts of DVDs is checking out the bonus features ~ outtakes are at the top of our list when it comes to extras! The Rio 2 Blu-Ray’s features include sing-alongs and step-by-step dancing instructions that my little dancing queen cannot resist!
If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of Rio 2 to enjoy with the family this Summer… over and over and over. We’ve already watched it four times so far in less than a week! 😉 Whether you are inspired with ideas above to throw a large thematic party or a small family movie night get-together, I guarantee you will have a blast! And to save while you pop your selection of movie-watching snacks, click here to enjoy $1 off any Pop Secret popcorn at Walmart {while supplies last}!
